How to choose a wedding venue in Australia

How many guests can the venue actually fit?

Guest count is the single biggest driver of every other budget line, and venue capacity is the first thing that quietly decides it. Ask for the seated dinner number, the cocktail-style number, and the ceremony number — they're often three different rooms. Many Australian venues quote a ceremony capacity that's larger than the sit-down reception capacity in the same building.

Can you hold the ceremony and reception in one place?

All-in-one wedding venues handle the ceremony and reception in one location — no transfers, no transport gap. Many Australian venues do both naturally — vineyards, country properties, hotels, beachside resorts. When venues only do one, factor in transport, photographer transition time, and a clear runsheet for guest movement between sites.

What's the music and event curfew?

Most Australian venues set a hard music curfew — usually 10pm in residential areas, midnight in licensed venues, later in CBD spots and remote properties. Confirm in writing before booking. The curfew shapes your runsheet — if you want a midnight sparkler exit at a 10pm curfew venue, you'll need a Plan B.

What's the wet weather plan?

For outdoor ceremonies and cocktail spaces, ask the venue for their wet weather plan in writing. Some Australian venues have a covered alternate space included in the hire fee; some require you to hire a marquee at short notice. East-coast summer humidity, autumn afternoon rain, and southerly busters all change the day — knowing the plan before you book matters.

Does the venue include catering, or do you bring your own?

Australian wedding venues split into three: full inclusive catering (most hotels, ballrooms, all-in-one venues), in-house catering with a fixed menu (restaurants, vineyards), and dry-hire venues where you bring everything (private estates, marquees, farms). Venue hire and catering combined usually account for 50–60% of an Australian wedding budget — the catering model shapes the whole shape of the day.

Where will guests stay?

For destination-leaning venues — Hunter Valley, Blue Mountains, Mornington Peninsula, Margaret River — accommodation availability shapes the guest list response rate. Many Australian wineries and country estates have on-site rooms; smaller properties have a recommended local accommodation partner list. Reserve room blocks early — 9–12 months out for peak Saturdays.

How will guests get there and home?

For non-CBD venues, plan transport before you confirm. Coach hires, return shuttles, taxis, and ride-share blackspots are all real-world venue questions. Couples often forget the post-curfew exit — the wedding ends at 10pm, but the last guest going home matters too.
