How to choose wedding dresses & suits in Australia

Decide between off-the-rack, made-to-measure, or custom

Australian brides split fairly clearly: around 3 in 4 buy a brand-new gown off the rack from a bridal boutique, around 1 in 6 work with a custom designer for a made-to-measure or couture piece, and roughly 1 in 12 buy pre-loved. Off-the-rack wins on speed and price; custom wins on fit and individuality; pre-loved wins on cost and sustainability. Match the route to the time you have, the budget, and how specific your vision is.

Plan for the dress timeline, not just the dress

An off-the-rack gown in Australia typically arrives 4–6 months after the deposit. Made-to-measure or custom designs run 6–9 months. Alterations need a further 2–3 months for two or three fitting rounds. Working backwards: confirm your gown 9–12 months out for off-the-rack, 12–14 months out for custom. Late changes are expensive and stressful — the gown decision wants to land before too many other budget lines settle.

Consider a second reception outfit

Around 4 in 10 Australian brides now wear a second outfit for the reception — a shorter dress for the dance floor, a sleeker silhouette without the train, or a bold colour change. Some plan it from the start; others find the right second piece during the main-gown shopping. If you're tempted, brief the bridal boutique early so you can look at second-look options the same day rather than starting a separate search later.

Coordinate the bridal party look — colour or style first

The dominant Australian bridesmaid look is now same-colour-different-styles (around 6 in 10 weddings) — bridesmaids choose individual cuts in a shared palette so each person feels comfortable. Identical matching dresses still feature in just over 1 in 4 weddings; mismatched-but-coordinated palettes round out around 1 in 8. Decide colour-first or style-first early so the bridal party can shop with a clear brief.

Match the suits to the dress code

Most Australian weddings now sit at semi-formal/cocktail (around 6 in 10) or black-tie (around 1 in 3). Around 6 in 10 grooms and groomsmen now buy their suits, a third have them tailor-made, and only around 1 in 16 hire — the shift toward purchase reflects a desire for keeper pieces rather than rentals. Coordinate fabric, lapel style, and pocket details across the groom and groomsmen well before alterations begin.

Build alterations into the budget

Alterations are usually a separate line from the dress purchase — typically $300–$1,500 depending on changes. Plan for 2–3 fitting rounds: an initial fit 8–10 weeks out, a refinement at 4–6 weeks, and a final pickup the week of the wedding. Don't skip the final pickup just because the dress 'feels right' — body shapes shift in the last fortnight (water retention, stress, schedule changes), and the final session catches it.

Plan accessories, shoes, and undergarments together

The dress works as a system — gown plus veil plus shoes plus undergarments plus jewellery. Shoes change the dress length (and therefore the alteration). Undergarments change the silhouette. Veils and accessories pull the look in or out of formality. Take everything to the second alteration fitting so the seamstress can pin to the actual day-of length and shape. The integrated fitting is what makes the dress feel made for you on the day.
