How to choose wedding hair & makeup artists in Australia

Always do the trial

Around 85% of Australian brides book a hair-and-makeup trial ahead of the wedding — and the small share who skip it tend to wish they hadn't. The trial is a 90-minute working session: you bring inspiration photos, sit through a full ceremony-and-reception look, photograph it from every angle in different light, and live with it for an evening. It's also where you find out if the artist's product range works on your skin tone, hair density, and personal sensitivities.

Pick the look before you pick the products

Most Australian brides are leaning toward soft and elegant rather than full glam — soft and elegant is now the dominant brief, with full-glam, classic-statement, and modern-minimal looks each holding smaller followings. Hairstyles split fairly evenly between up-do, half-up, and wavy-down, with the choice usually driven by the dress neckline and venue setting. Bring 5–8 reference photos to the trial — that's enough to show direction without overwhelming the artist.

Confirm on-location vs salon

Most Australian wedding hair-and-makeup artists offer on-location service — they come to you, set up at the getting-ready venue, and work through the bridal party as a team. A small minority require salon-based appointments. On-location is the calmer choice on the day (no transit between salon and venue), but can add a travel-and-call-out fee. Confirm in writing the inclusions, the parking situation, and whether the artist provides their own lighting (north-facing daylight is essential).

Match the team size to the bridal party

A solo artist can usually do the bride plus 3–4 bridesmaids in the available morning window, working makeup-then-hair in sequence. Beyond that, you'll either need to start unreasonably early or split the work — bringing in a dedicated hair stylist to work in parallel with the makeup artist, or a full hair-and-makeup team. The breaking point is usually around 5 services. Ask the artist how they'd structure the morning before booking.

Plan the schedule with the photographer

Hair-and-makeup timing drives the entire morning. The bride's hair-and-makeup typically wraps 60–90 minutes before the ceremony so you can dress, do bridal-party portraits, and travel without rushing. Most artists work backwards from the ceremony time — share the runsheet at the trial so they can sequence everyone. Buffer time matters: morning calls running late is the most-flagged pain point in couple reviews.

Brief the artist on longevity

Australian wedding days are long — especially summer outdoor ceremonies into late-night dance floors. Confirm the artist's longevity strategy: airbrush versus traditional makeup base, setting techniques, primer choice, lash and brow staying power, hair pin density, refresh products in your bridal kit. The trial is when you stress-test 12 hours of dancing, hugging, and (probably) some happy tears.

Confirm what the package actually includes

Australian wedding H&M deposits typically sit around 25% of the package price. Ask directly: how many services are included for the bridal party, who pays for travel and parking, what's the rate for additional services on the morning, are children included, what happens if a bridesmaid drops out, and is a touch-up kit provided. Pricing surprises mid-morning are stressful — front-load the questions at the trial.
