Under the Marriage Act 1961 (the rules celebrants need to follow) you will need to produce the following as evidence of your identity and date and place of birth. Eithera driver’s license + your birth certificate, oran Australian or overseas passportIf you have previously been married, you will also need to produce evidence of how your last marriage was terminated. This is either a death certificate, a divorce certificate or a decree of nullity if your previous marriage was annulled.

As long as they attend the wedding in person, are over 18 and can understand English (so they can follow what is happening during the ceremony), you can choose whomever you want to be your witness!
